Welcome to the Westmoor Golden Ram website. Here you can find archives of our old issues and articles, and information about our club.

Work on Section Pages (September 2nd, 2005)
We're starting work on some pages for each section. As of now, Columns and Entertainment are done (see links to the left), and the other sections should be finished in the near future.

Issue III Uploaded (August 18th, 2005)
Thanks to the tireless work of our Golden Ram website staff, we've managed to upload all of the articles from Issue III. Check it out at the Archive page.

Issue III is Out! (June 7th, 2005)
Issue III is out! We're currently going around the school and handing them out, and if you'd like to get one yourself, you can drop by Room 411 (in the math hallway) and pick up a copy.

Unfortunately, the school year's over, so I won't be able to update the site over the summer (no access to the server over the summer). Some of the main articles are up here, but most of the Issue III articles will have to wait until after the summer to be uploaded. The entire newspaper layouts, however, in both Microsoft Publisher and Adobe PDF formats, can be found on our Downloads page.

Designed for 1024x768 Mozilla Firefox
Many of the pages here are designed for at least a 1024 pixel page width, and so you might enounter glaring space issues. Simply change your resolution to 1024x768. If you're using a school computer, you can use our resolution changer program.

This page was mostly created and tested with Mozilla Firefox. Due to incompatabilities in rendering methods between the two browsers, how the page is displayed under Internet Explorer might be slightly different from its intended look. Most all pages should display just fine in any browser, but if you happen to notice any glaring rendering anomalies that cause a page to be unreadable, let me know at westmoorgoldenram@yahoo.com. In any case, I'd highly encourage you to download Mozilla Firefox, not only to view this site as best as possible but to adopt for all your browsing uses. Go to www.mozilla.org or click on the image to the left. -Nathan Yan, Webmaster

The AP Question

For many Juniors and Seniors at Westmoor, this school year has been the year of the AP, a nonstop rush of drills, flash cards, and night-before cramming. As Nathan Yan writes, however, in this rampant focus to "pass the AP", students, teachers, parents, the administration, and the education system have lost sight of their original aim, to educate students, instead placing students into a heavily structured, test-training environment.

Chronicle Piece: A version of this article was actually republished in the June 28, 2005 edition of the San Francisco Chronicle. Check it our here.

Steroid Debate
The Negative Effects of Utilizing Steroids: The Danger to Athletes, Fans, and Fair Competition - Marco Paz
Steroid Nation, or How I Overcame My Apprehensions and Learned to Love the Performance Enhancing Society - Nathan Yan

In our Issue III debate, two writers, Staff Writer Marco Paz and Editor-in-Chief Nathan Yan, square off in the controversy concerning the rampant use of steroids in proffesional sports. What are its effects on society, do the benefits justify the drawbacks? And ultimately, what should be done with regard to steroid policy? From ethical, economical, competitive, and pragmatic standpoints, both writers analyze the steroid issue and come up with some suprising viewpoints.

Some Assembly Required
Part I: The CPU

When it comes to computers, building your own is the only way to go. Store-bought computer have a limited selection of components to choose from, are hard to configure due to non-standard specs (especially with motherboards, cases, and power supplies, and cost WAY more than the market value, and are something that no self-respecting geek would allow into their home. In the Some Assembly Required series, we'll be detailing the ins-and-outs of choosing the components for your own computer, analyzing the products out there, explaining all of the specs and terms, and making recommendations on what to get for your price and performance needs. We begin with the most important component of the computer: The CPU

Sojourn to the Past
Sojourn, in a Different Perspective - Raine
Sojourn to the Past: An Experience of a Lifetime - Jonathan Chee

This past year, thirteen Westmoor students had the opportunity to go participate in the Sojourn to the Past project, a trip for high school students from around the United States down to the South, and explore the heart of America's Civil Rights movement. Two students offer interesting - and contrasting - perspectives on the trip and their own personal experiences.
